Adventure in Arnarfjörður
We offer you the experience of a whole day of amazing adventures in Arnarfjörður
How about spending one day in Arnarfjörður, one of the most beautiful fjords of Iceland. Going out to deep sea fishing, watch the whales, take a history tour through the area the saga of Gísli Súrssona takes place, and have a three course meal at an abandoned farm on the beach of Arnarfjörður. This tourdescription is real, yes a whole fairytale.
Departure at 10:00 from Bíldudalur harbour. We sail on the passengerboat Happasæll that is a 100tonn stealship prepared as a passengership and restaurant. Ahead of us we have a day of adventure where there will be much to see and hear, and taste as well. Onboard we have hot coffee and anything necessary for a day’s journey.
We sail out into the fjord, to the fishing grounds of Arnarfjörður. The trip takes about 30-40 minutes. Then we prepare the fishing rod and the fishing can begin. Who knows which one of you will get the smallest fish or the biggest? One thing is for sure, everyone will enjoy the fishing. When you have cought enough we sail further into the fjord, to Geirþjófsfjörður.
While sailing into the fjord you will have a light lunch and some coffee. The fish you cought will be filleted and side dishes prepared for the grill at the end of the night. Now you better keep your eyes open because whales are very common in Arnarfjörður. A humpback whale could be swimming around the fjord and it’s rather likely that a white-tailed eagle will fly by, the fjord is after all called Eaglefjord. You will get informations about the sea, the fishing and how people have lived in this area in the past and the present. The nature in Arnarfjörður is quite special, a lot to see and experience.
When we reach Geirþjófsfjörður we drop the anchor at the end of the fjord and put out a small boat to get to the shore. Now we have ahead of us a walk through the site of the saga of Gísli Súrsson, a story time everyone will find entertaining. We will visit the place of his home, his hide-out and Einhamar cliff. We will bring something to eat at one of the locations. After the story has been told we return to the ship.
When everyone is back on board we sail out into the fjord and find a place at the shore where we have shelter from the wind, drop the anchor and go to the shore. While the coals are warming up people can walk around, take in the area, play on the shore or just sit and relax and enjoy the view. Now we will serve dinner, starting with an appetizer, then the main course and finally a dessert and freshly brewed coffee. The fish you cought in the morning will taste great and so will anything else that is planed. When everyone has had their fill and are happy we will go back to the boat and sail to Bíldudalur, estimated time of arrival there after a long and hopefully great day is between 22:00 and 23:00.
We recommend warm clothes, such as hats, mittens and scarfs, as it does get cold out on sea and we will return late in the evening. We also recommend sunglasses and even some sunscreen.
